ComputerXplorers are DEEEEEEEEEELIGHTED to be back at Sutton Girls. We had a blast in the Summer term and have more great activities lined up for the Autumn and New Year
If you have been to our Saturday clubs before, note that we have slightly tweaked the format for our course.
Each course will now feature one core program (which we’ve imaginatively called “The Main Event”)
We’ll still have a variety of other software for kids to try each week, at their discretion. Our classes aren’t structured lectures – we want children to explore the software and peripherals we bring and enjoy learning at their own pace. We are there to support them all the way, as well as setting micro-challenges and guidance through the trickier bits
For this course, the Main Event will be PROGRAMMING WITH THE MICRO:BIT.
What is a micro:bit?
The micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer. It has 25 red LED lights, programmable buttons, an ACCELEROMETER, a built-in compass and it can use a low energy BLUETOOTH connection.
What are we going to do with them?
We’re going to learn how to program the micro:bit to create:
- wearable technology (e.g. a watch that we can use to play rock paper scissors).
- a coded message system to talk to other micro:bits.
- light up displays using the micro:bit to control how and when the lights flash.
What else is available?
You will be able to create your own STOP MOTION ANIMATION movies or feature clips! Our amazing software allows users to take multiple frames, add SPECIAL FX & overlay SOUNDTRACKS to create a full feature story, set anywhere their imagination takes them.
Do you want to design your dream home? What would you design to replace your school? A skate park? A water park? A massive cinema with a Nando’s on top? You can let your imagination take control using our COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN software to create the space of your dreams.
We’ll also have our VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSETS and XL GREEN SCREEN for some additional fun & games
Other boring stuff for parents…
One of us will greet your child by the main school office on the first week. You’re more than welcome to come on in with them at the start to see what we’ve got planned. We’ll be in a classroom (E2) within the new block. Enter the school by the main door, turn left past the school office and walk around the quad. Go left into the cafeteria and we’re at the far side by the staircase.
There are toilets (boys & girls) located in the same area as our classroom. Unfortunately, we can’t permit food and drinks in the room with all the computers (no-one likes finding bits of crisps in the keyboards) but there is plenty of seating just outside the room and a water dispenser for use.
